Murphy’s Management Axioms

On the Military:
* Never forget that your weapon was ordered from the lowest bidder.
* If the enemy is in your range, so are you in his.

On Work:
* The more elaborate the corporate name, the smaller the company.
* If it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done.

On Technology:
* To err is human. But to really screw things up requires a computer geek.

On Love:
* Money can’t buy you love but it sure gives you a great bargaining position.
* Before you find your handsome prince, you’ve got to kiss lots of frogs.

Buzzword Dictionary:
AdminiSphere. The senior organizational layer that makes decisions
but is usually profoundly inappropriate or irrelevant.

AlphaGeek. The most knowledgeable person in an office or work group.

BetaMaxed. When a technology is overtaken in the market by inferior but better-marketed competition as in “Microsoft betamaxed Apple out of the market”.

BlameStorming. A group discussion of why a deadline
was missed or a project failed and who was responsible.

BlowingYourBuffer. Losing one’s train of thought.
Occurs when the person you are speaking with won’t let you speak a word.

ChainsawConsultant. An outside expert brought in to reduce
the employee head count, leaving the top brass with clean hands.

CubeFarm. An office filled with cubicles.

FlightRisk. Used to describe employees who are
suspected of planning to leave a company soon.

Glazing. sleeping with your eyes open;
a popular pastime at conferences.

Gray Matter. Older, experienced business people
hired by young entrepreneurial firms
trying to appear more professional and established.

Mouse Potato. The computer version of the couch potato.

Ohno second. That minuscule fraction of time during
which you realize you’ve just made a terrible blunder.

Open-Collar Workers. People who work at home or telecommute.

Plug-and-Play. A new hire who doesn’t require training.
“That new guy is totally plug-and-play.”

Seagull Manager. A manager who flies in, makes a
lot of noise, messes up everything and leaves.

Stress Puppy. A businessman who thrives on being
stressed-out .
