Some days before the actual date this year, I was Honored when someone asked my help to tweet the names of people who lost their lives last year.
However, there was a hue & cry by a lot of people who felt it was in bad taste, due to which we decided not to go ahead with, but keep a silence in our own way.
It was actually funny & pathetic to see a lot of the same people get patriotic, crucifying the media, politicians from a distance using all kinds of hashtags on the same day with the thought of making it a trending topic.
I also received a lot of text messages from people who have not been in touch with me in quite some while now.
“As a mark of respect to d martyrs of mumbai Terror war, people all over d country r wearing whites on Thusday ie. 26th.Pls spread the msg n wear white if psbl.”
“MUM , BA & AI together symbolise a powerful trinity for amchi MUMBAI. This 26 / 11 let ’s vow to keep this nurturing , caring and providing city safe for always !”
“Shabaash my mumbai voter for bringing back RR Patil as Mah home minister & promoting VilasraoDeshmukh as union cabinet minister - the 2 real Sonia Congress heros of 26/11. Even the terrorists must be laughing at us for this “Mumbai Spirit”. Cheers”
Besides this another dear friend who was a part of C4C our action group last year (disbanded like everyone else, thanks to lack of time & commitment) had this to say:
You have been absent from twitter today. Protest? Mourning? Responsible silence?
ME: As a sign of remembrance in our small way, because alone this is what I can do
Commendable! But one could always comment on the positives like how positively fucked we are. I lit a few fires.
ME: Sure but what happens tomorrow? Everything is forgotten
Should we attempt to revive C4C? Or is it like flogging a Dead Mule? We could turn it into an online group Kya bolta tu?
Why don’t we get together a small core group & relaunch it as an online initiative we could use mediums like twitter to publicize it & encourage people to form local groups. I am game to give it 1 more try.
ME: Why don’t you restart the whole thing, the website is also ready, some of the causes of last year are still on & I shall be there.
Nothing…..Just Silence after this. I have written about this last year about the so called activists & others who disappeared this year including the known celebrities.
Frankly all of this has ceased to surprise me. Some of my friends tell me that you have stopped being passionate & my reply is “I have no expectations & more importantly have become pragmatic that unless it directly affects you, nobody cares except do some kind of armchair discussions”
And Facebook, Twitter have become channels to crib, open pages, status updates & what have you, claiming to be using social media to propagate.
Nope, False, we were more worried about elections in other countries, wearing black bands and all that, whereas Bhaad mein jaye India. I have been specific here.

It is one of the most painful and evil aspect of terrorism that the terrorists use own cherished values to attack us. 26/11 attacks were orchestrated with the idea to subvert the media and use it to spread terror, so observing a high pitched campaign this year wouldnt have been in the nation’s interest. Many Indians have shown remarkable maturity in not letting the enemy hijack and use our own grief against us. (btw,i would come under the silent protestors category)
But it requires maturity to handle grief elegantly, if at times we fail to supress our cries and let enemy score a brownie point, it is because we are human, the perpetrators are not. We still gain a moral edge against them.
