It was a Sunday, some weeks ago, a rare day when we decided to meet up with friends for some drinks and dinner.

Gathering at a friends place, after a couple of drinks, the usual questions of ‘What shall we order? Where shall be order from?’ arose and D said let’s try our China 1 but they don’t deliver, but since everyone was in agreement, somebody would go an pick it up.

On a quick trip to Baroda, decided to try out Ginger Hotel.

We reached Baroda in the evening around 6.30 pm. The check in was smooth. The Parking space was reasonable in the basement. Went up to the room. The AC was bad. IPL had started with a lot of matches under the bridge so to speak, along with a lot of issues, harbhajan, sreesanth, cheer leaders etc having passed under the bridge, a close friend & single malt enthusiast (Mehul A Desai though 3/4 of us can be termed more enthusiast than collectors/connoisseurs) had been calling us over for a dram! beside watching the match also.

Co incidentally, another friend (Neil Rodrigues) was promised some exceptional Rye whiskey. Templeton Rye Whiskey

I was completely exhausted from the morning session of meeting old school friends at Preetam da Dhaba, where the company was great, food ok, beer chilled…..all of which ran till 5p.m.

As a confirmed foodie, with a bit of interest in wanting to experiment my favorite food with whiskey & wine, I had decided that today we would have the universal, chat (mumbai style) along with the Macallan 12yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Read the rest of this entry »

One of my all time favorites. Reach there by 7 pm. Wander around, drink their smoky chaas or jal jira. Look at the mehndi artiste, garba etc. And then sit down for a Meal that never ends, as also does not allow you to get up till you are stuffed with, variety of vegetables, roti(phulka); bajra roti; khichdi farsan & finally sweet to top it up.

A large elaborate menu providing local gujarati, rajasthani farsan, meals, sweets as also unique mix of mexican dishes. Lovely open air place to chill out for a couple of hours.

The Great Bhagwati is truly great in terms of its variety; consistency & quality of food - from snacks to a complete meal. What is surprising that they are able to maintain the quality at places where they undertake catering also.

They have a VFM afternoon Buffet on sundays, whilst the a la carte is pretty good to excellent. One of the few restaurants that got a Margarita right! three times I have been there. Some of the unique deserts were also pretty good. Been there more than thrice trying it out with buffet, afternoons, evenings & found the food & service consistently good. Remains open till 1 am

An old institution that has now gone seedy & tacky. They need to renovate the entire place up. The food is consistently inconsistent in terms of sambhar being sweet & sour; hot to cold; service outstanding to non existent. Real waste!

A bit of posh version than the fort one. Stick to the time tested manglorean stuff, bombil, crabs & sea food, though the sukka chicken is also good. Do not repeat NOT try the useless chinese & other mixture stuff. Lovely service, good drinks, but long waiting after 9.30 pm. However except during monsoon, can wait outside. With the Pay & Park outside, I understand that one picks up the beer/drink & has it in the car whilst waiting for the nos to be called, never tried it though & in particular now with the check going on round the corner:)
