2008 is going to present an Exciting, Challenging & sometimes Frustrating market conditions. In many cases all three situations will be present at once. Such business environment demands the best from Professionals.
To succeed in such exciting times, lets see what skills do a manager needs to refine. The following skills listing are not in any particular sequence of importance. Some of you may find the last one to be of top priority, while for others this may be just the right sequence! I leave it to your judgment.
1: Hiring (& keeping) the best.
As products (& or services) become similar, its the people who will make the difference.
Remember, You can’t do everything by yourself; Nor should you try to do so.
3: Effective communication.
Ensure your ideas & thoughts are understood for effective implementation.
4: Managing time.
Everybody has 24 hours, how do you make most of it? (For disappearing acts, it’s hard to beat what happens to the eight hours supposedly left after eight of sleep and eight of work.)
5: Managing teams.
Team is more than just sum of its parts. (Remember ‘Team is a group of people who may not be equal in qualification/experience or talent but are equal in COMMITMENT”)
6: Managing the internal environment.
Convincing your own people is more difficult (sometimes more important!) than your customers.
7: Appraising & coaching.
Feedback to subordinates that helps them improve results.
8: Developing your career. (Not only up!)
You may not be promoted unless you are replaceable!
9: Understand the macro economic conditions.
World is flat!
10: Lead by example.
Practice what you preach.
