I have been seeing a lot of these over the past couple of months & always wonder, whether does it matter to the Traffic Police or RTO or even more importantly the fine of Rs. 100/- probably is too little to make a difference to anybody; BUT then WTF do ordinary citizens keep getting caught on such matters?
Can see such no. plates in south too. Imagine it being used by criminal elements and affected party not being able to do anything as can’t read local language. I know its not legal in India, but cops don’t seem to take it seriously.
Well as per declared by RTO in Pune, number plates in Marathi language are legal. It is under the heading ‘Fancy No Plate Banawnarya 118 Dukan Daranna Notice’. Its in Pune Today Section on Page no 1 3rd. Dated on 11th Dec. 2009. If not found link is as follows.

True. So each RTO is a law to itself 🙂 The plan of having common number plate initiated couple of years back has been long forgotten.
