Pop Tates – An old favourite, that has many branches now, which used to be regular visits, but then too much of a good thing, so had not visited in quite a while. However, in the past two weeks it so happened that we ended up visiting it twice. Once during the dry day of elections and then during the Diwali holidays for my Mother’s birthday.

Both times for lunch, so was pretty empty, but they insisted that we sit on the first floor, which became a bit of problem for my mom, though they showed us the lift, but that was also a fair walk.

The food was good as earlier, Indian continental and most of it the same order over the years – Starters – Garlic bread with cheese and chilli – quite good, the bread crisp but not toasty, cheese evenly spread with good garnishing of chillies; Kernel corn tikki was tried and found to be quite delicious with a combination of mayo and salsa (not provided by them, but asked for it); Melwyn fries and potato wedges were pretty sorted, and found equal favour, though my personal favourite is wedges.

For the mains there was mini pizza – quite nice, in fact mom loved the paneer toppings, which normally do not work for me; Penne creamy pesto and arabiatta were both good examples of indian italian at its best; the veg burger here is quite consistent for the past 15+ years and works well for my wife. The Paneer shashlik sizzler was pretty good, whilst I was happy with chicken sizzler with Afrikano sauce, no veggies but repalced by pineapple and mashed potatoes.

This was washed down with Virgin Margrita and Mojito by the ladies. To top it we had a chocolate mousse (only thing without eggs) for moms birthday. All in all comfort italian/continental Indian food.

The service was a bit of let down, given that previously we have been used to quite excellent service. Clearing the table – when there was just one table, taking orders, the basics were just a problem.
