I was fortunate enough to be invited for the preview of the soon to be launched Monkey Bar a week in advance.

A unique invite stash sent made it more exciting. Convincing a friend who stays in Bandra to accompany me, landed up on time. Found our name on the list, were escorted inside and found a place at the bar which was a tad quieter compared to the rest of the place. Quite kitschy and nice, good air conditioning and a well manned bar.

Began with a Mangaa – vodka, aam panna, sweet lime and miint seasoned with jeera & salt – quite good and hit the spot to begin with, and was finished in quick time. The host Manu Chandra came up and we chatted about general things and more specifically about the food and contents of the cocktails – how different is the food going to be (his answer was wait and watch) alcohol content of the cocktail (his answer, will not skimp ever, if you find it so, call me out) Pricing would be attractive and competitive to the close by Bonobo, Elbo room and others.

He ordered another drink Copper Monkey – served in a brass tumbler – whiskey, passion fruit, mint and lime – And that was good, a must try. Bringing the Calcutta tinge was the Adhunik Pani Puri – bit of gastronomy, wonder if I could push to call it molecular, but tasted quite like the masala of Puchhka and worked well.

The laal maas phulkas served like soft tacos could not be left alone, though found it to contain a bit more salt the first time, whilst the Paneer Bao – chinese buns stuffed with cottage cheese were pretty unique.

By this time, the place was over packed and the heat, music and crush of people was getting to me. So bid good bye, promising Manu to come over and try it once the dust settles down and there is space.

Disclaimer – A preview invite, hence cannot be costed out. Also some service would be better or worse based on the nos of people invited
